hey,

i have a linksys router (model network everywhere/linksys nr041-ca) and i can't get the thing to work.

i found the support information here here but is hasn't gotten me anywhere.

i can't get the internet light to come on. i tried the easy cd setup, tried the manual setup, and tried to install the firmware update but nothing. i don't know what else to do. any suggestions?

i've had the router work before and it was very esay to setup using the setup disk. i've checked all the cat5 cables, the dsl connection, and everything else.

Make sure you have a regular patch cable between your modem and router, and not a crossover. I have done that before!

thanks for the info guys,

i thought i had a crossover cable but it turned out to be for a really short peice of cat5, so nothing happening there. as for the auto-sensing bit, this is what i'm working with:

3Com 3C996B Gigabit Server NIC info here
and
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC info here

i can't see anything on those pages about auto-sensing, os if anyone could let me know the score on these nics, let me know.

Can your pc get an ip address without using the router? ie - plug the modem's cat5 cable directly into your nic.

Do you use a username and password to access the internet?

thanks for the info.

i looked at my reply to my own post and it doesn't make much sense. i was actually writing a reply to another question i had in another forum. i cut and pasted it out of notepad and didn't pay attention to what i was doing. so, worry for the confusion.

so, bigcheez, i can get an ip without the router (i think). i've been online like this since september with the setup of:

wall jack -> phone line -> modem -> cat5 -> nic (my comp)

so now i want to through a router and a laptop into the mix but the setup won't work. the internet light on the router won't come on when i go :

wall jack -> phone line -> modem -> cat5 -> router -> cat5 -> nic (my comp)

so i think there's something wrong with the router. before, when i setup the router successfully, i could use an ip address to change the admin settings for the router but now that won't work.

and yes. i do use a password and username to access my connection.
