Posted on the sli forum with no responses.. hoping one of you techos will have some idea ;-)

seems to be a fairly common problem but I havent come across any real conclusions and im no real techo...
basically the system freezes. mostly in games but i have had it freeze in apps and general OS use. specs below.

my last efforts include a fresh install of vista ultimate 32bit with 1 card installed. then:
- installing display driver 175.16
- installing nforce driver 9.64
- installing ntools 6.01
- flashing bios 790i po4 sys update
- installing HD sound driver r1.90
- then inserted the 2nd card and installed driver

have tried various combinations of drivers and hardware configs (1 card, only 2gb ram etc)
current bios version 2.053.c3 4/18/2008

All clock settings standard.... i am running everything (inc games) at 2560x1600.

as i said im no tech but to me it either seems to be a driver issue (vista/sli)or some timings (FSB/cpu/gpu/ram)are incompatible??? NO IDEA

specs:
CPU: Intel core 2 quad q6600 2.4
MB: XFX 790i ultra sli
RAM: Corsair 4GB (2x2) DDR3 1333
GFX: 2x XFX GF8800GTX XXX
PSU: Antec 1000w
OS: Win Vista ultimate 32
HDD: Seagate sataII 500GB
DVD: Samsung sataII
CASE: Antec nine hundred
DISPLAY: Samsung 305t

I will provide more info if needed.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanx

I can only think of 2 reasons:
1. Overheating
2. Faulty RAM / incompatible RAM speed

got some figures from the performance monitor, not sure if anything here looks out of order, seems ok to me though.

this isnt under load. not sure the best way to test underload without it crashing before i get the results... will have a try

cpu temps
1 42c
2 38c
3 38c
4 42c

gpu temps
1 68c
2 62c

mobo
temp 29c
pcie volt 1.3v
nforce volt 1.5v
fsb volt 1.2v
fsb 1068mhz
pcie 2500mhz
mcp pcie 2500mhz

ram
1.5v
1335mhz

are there any apps/logs i can get to that will give me an indication of what is happening?

Can you turn caps lock on when the computer freezes?

have you tried testing your RAM?
remove all but one, if it freezes again, swap that RAM with another, continue through all of you RAM until it doesn't freeze. If you still can't get it to work, that's probably not the problem and we can look elsewhere.

yeah the ram was kinda the issue...

after 20+ OS installs, driver configs and installs, hardware configs and weeks trawling the net for answers... basically came down to the ram not getting enough power.. default setting was 1.5v and it needed 1.7v.

a bit annoyed that there was no indication anywhere that this had to be done (ram or mobo manuals etc). but the good thing to come out of it is that i know a crap load more about my system now.

cheers
