I just wanted peoples opinions on something that I have been thinking about doing.

I have a media center system at home running Kubuntu that's connected to our living room television that me and my 2 roommates use to videos that we create or random videos we have on our computers. More often than not however it's used as a storage center for all of our stuff that we like to share.

It currently only has 200GB of hard drive space and I have been meaning to upgrade this for quite some time.

I have been looking around and noticing that 1TB hard drives are relatively well priced for the capacity they offer (around 250$ - 280$).

MY question is this: Do you think it would be better to just get a 1TB hard drive or a few 500GB hard drives (which would be more expensive) and raid them together?

I would get a couple 500's and RAID them. what would you do if your single 1TB hard drive failed?

Yeah I suppose that would probably be the best option.

I just thought it would be cool to have a 1TB hard drive.

Kind of expensive though. 3 500 GB hard drives is going to run around 390 - 450$ as opposed to a non-raided 1 TB drive at 250-280$

But I guess I would have the backup and fault prevention.

For that price you can get two TB drives and do RAID-1

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to end up doing. I was thinking and it's only another 30 - 40$ to just get two 1TB drives.

Thanks for the input guys.
