There is usually a function key that switches from the main laptop screen to an external monitor. What brand laptop is it?

Well if it is only a new computer then you should have the manual that will tell you the function key combo you need.

In the meantime you can try fn+F5.

??? if it's a brand new computer isn't your monitor still under warranty? And if so why don't you just get it fixed?

I'm curious how you knew the Acer had a DVI out and the monitor was digital and had a DVI in?
