Whats the temp that a CPU can get before it gets damaged?

Intel® Pentium® 4 processor

sSpec Number sl7e4
Processor Frequency 3 GHz
CPUID String 0f34h
Package Type 478 pin PPGA
Core Voltage 1.25V-1.400V
Bus Speed 800 MHz
Thermal Guideline 89.0W
Core Stepping D0
Thermal Spec 69.1°C (156.38°F) Maximum Operating
L2 Cache Size 1 MB
Manufacturing Technology 90 nm
L2 Cache Speed 3.00 GHz
Bus/Core Ratio 15
Box Order Code BX80546PG3000E
OEM Order Code RK80546PG0801M

Thermal Design Power
The maximum amount of heat which a thermal solution must be able to dissipate from the processor so that the processor will operate under normal operating conditions

Thermal Temp
The thermal specification is the temperature at the critical point on the die and usually represents the hottest point on the processor. Therefore, the Maximum thermal specification represents the maximum temperature for reliable operation of the processor.

sSpec Number
Also known as specification number. A five character string (SL36W, XL2XL, etc.) that is printed on the processor, and used to identify the processor. By knowing the processor's sSpec Number, you can find out the processor's core speed, cache size and speed, core voltage, maximum operating temperature and so on.

AMD CPU can run happily around 70*C without being damaged to much. An Intel CPU would have commited suicide by this point though.

Anything over 65*C [ for either CPU ], I would suggest looking into better cooling in my personal opinion.

The new AMD X2 cores have some sort of amazing technology that means they run cooler that most current Intel P4's and AMD 64's yet they have TWO cores.

Thats impressive :D

As I said, that is my PERSONAL opinion. I know people that run them nice and hot [ like hot enough to keep the room warm ] but I like to be able to remove my CPU from the mobo every now and then to replaces the thermal compound and check the pins etc.

HEY NO FAIR!! no i fixed my wiring! i used my extra power supply. (longer cords) Everything behing my mobo!

What do you suggest in water cooling? something that'll keep my CPU around 39ºC or 40ºC

PS using * is better! looks cooler. but if you insist....

VapoChill make AMAZING water cooling kits. They cost a fair bit, but will keep your CPU cold enough to freeze your nuts to the metal.

As for using º instead of *, its easier to press one key than four :P

Perhaps I was over exagertaing a little :P

My bad !! :D

But VapoChill do keep your CPU the coolest out of all the cooling kits I have come across.
