partitioning problem?

okay i have an old compaq computer. that had windows 98 so i put in a windows xp cd it started to o a partition thing and i asked me how i wanted to do it.it gave me four choises fat quik ntsc quic and just FAT or nstc somthing like that so i did it with the ntcs one and when it reooted it said something like mulipartion not found?
this is probably a bad discirition so tell me if you need more info.

Compaq computers store their BIOS information in a special partition, not on a chip like most computers. If provide the model of the computer, I will see if I can find the disk to restore it.

Were you doing a "Clean" install (formating the drive and installing) or were you just trying to upgrade?

Windows 9.x systems use the FAT (File Allocation Table) system whereas XP uses NTFS (New Technology File System). 98 is uanble to read the NTFS format (without an extra driver) so if your trying to do an upgrade rather than fresh install that might have something to do with it.
