These new processors, intel pentium D, are they any good ? Or would you just buy a pentium 4 instead ?

The Pentium D's are dual core P4's basically, so yes they are better than your typical P4 and quite expensive.

pentium d is like having 2 single threading pent 4's .... the penitum extreme versions add the hyper threading, i use a pent d 930 and it works great for me

wow dual core p4's. that almost sounds like hyper speed compared to my centrino m 760. lol

For Intel I would say they are the top of the line but some would argue AMD procs are better. In the end it is all up to you.
