Hey Guys!
I have a old computer that has no expandable slots but has a serial and usb ports, I was wondering If i were to buy a 56k modem, would it matter if it was usb or serial? Also What are V.92, V.90, V.40 ?

I was thinking about buying this zoom modem http://zoom.com/products/dial_up_external_usb.html

or a US Robotics which are mostly Serial port.

What's better in your opinion Serial or Usb?

I would say serial. You will get no performance increase out of a USB one, and serial ones are a lot cheaper. I had been using one for years back home.

Also, serial modems require no configuration. You tell the computer there is a modem on COM1, and it dials. It will work on any version of Windows or Linux or Mac OS or OS/2 or whatever. With USB, you will have to mess with USB drivers.

Isn't USB thought to be faster though?

Don't you also get more features with a USB like call waiting? Or can you get that with serial also?

USB is faster, but it doesn't matter with a 5Kb connection. Thats like driving down a 30MPH road in a Geo and saying "We should get a race car. It would be faster." Yes, but the speed limit is still 30MPH, so it doesn't matter.

The modem on hold and such is part of the V.92 standard. A V.92 serial and a V.92 USB modem will have the same features.

Yes, but there is no reason to buy a brand new $60 modem. You can pick up the same type of thing on eBay for $10.
