Dear All,

I've got a problem with my MSI MS-8348 CD RW. I've just installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 which seem to upset it when copying music cd's. It copies fine and plays back ok until it gets to towards the last couple of tracks on the CD and then the songs disappears into static.

I've used Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum and the Windows XP media player copier, both with the same results.

It also seems to have a problem recognising the end of tracks at the end of pre-copied CD's when playing back - the song finishes but it keeps on trying to play it.

Has anyone got any ideas what wrong?

Thanks very much,

Al

It is probably due to the fact that you installed sp2. try contacting msi or going to the website and looking for a patch of some sort.

Also see if there is a Firmware update at the (MSI ) website .
Try a different CD-R brand .(sometimes if you change,it solves it )
Make shure DMA is enabled .
Make sure the buffer underrun protection is turned on in your burning software (usually the default is not turned on) .
If bios are older than 1 year on MotherBoard ,DMA might not be enabled.
All new Optical Disk writers have to have DMA enabled.
Go here to see if someone else is having same (you no they are )

CR48-A is same as MS-8348
Stay away from Award bios ,they are the worst .

If there is a firmware (bios) update for it ,that may be the ticket.

Thanks Guys,

I'm trying to install the latest firmware. I couldnt find anything for the MS8348 so downloaded the CR48A as suggested.

The update instructions tells me to close windows and reboot by Dos mode - please can you tell me how I do that with windows xp? The only dos screen I can find is the windows dos command prompt, and when I try and run the files from there I get a message saying my drive cant be found.

Thanks again

I'am going to find it for you ,almost all CD -rom makers make installing
firmware a breeze,I use Lite-on products ,and there installers are a breeze.

Here's what you do ,if you don't want to wait (hopefully you have a floppy drive ) open windows explorer (your files) and Right click on the 3 1/2 drive with the floppy card inserted ,click format ,and in format options ,check the Create an MS DOS startup disk . once it's done ,double click on the 3 1/2 icon and open it up,(you are going to see 15 files ,okay ,, now open a 2nd windows explorer next to that one ,and find the firmware files and drag them over into the 3 1/2 were the other 15 files are ...once you have draged everything over ..close out of everything and reboot with the floppy still inserted ,and it should run automaticly.

But I am going to see what i can find in the CR48A
javascript:void(window.open('spt_dvr_down.php?file=CR48-A2_210D.zip','open','width=390,height=355,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))

Disregard that link above ,,,this link here is a live utility from MSI
that will auto update your CD bios
javascript:void(window.open('/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_file_record.php?folder=4&kind=5&name=LiveUpdate.zip','open','width=350,height=250,scrollbars=yes,resizable=no'))

See it would not let me link it anyway cause of the java script
so use this below to go to the page and then just click on the live utility.

Here's the page it came from.

Thanks very much for that. I ran the update utility and got the latest stuff for my chipset but nothing appeared for my CD drive, so I did the thing you suggested with the floppy and it updated the firmware with no problems.

Thats not solved the problem with the drive not recognising the end of the track though - I'm going to have another go copying later on and see if thats ok now.
