I have a 400W 24 pin ATX power supply but I managed to plug it into a 20 pin motherboard. The 4 extra pins are not connected to anything and just hang off to the side. This may sound silly but I'm worried about my computer just busting into flames because I didn't use the right parts (should have gotten a 20 pin connector PSU instead of a 24 pin connector PSU). Do I have anything to worry about?

No, the pinout for the 20 and the 24 pin connectors are the same. The 24 just has 2 extra 12v+ lines and 2 grounds. Leaving them hanging off to the side shouldn't hurt anything.

Aren´t they even possible to separate? (usualy those 4 extra pin´s although they are all together are able to be separated (because with some boards that has to be done)..if yours is ok with that there´s no prob...but probably they can be separated.

I will see if I can take a picture of it sometime and edit this post with the pic in it. I think I'm pretty lucky because with some mother boards you cant let the 4 extra pins hang off because there is a component of the mobo just to the right of the male end where the connector goes on the mobo.

My PC P&C 510-SLI Express 510w PSU has a special connector where the extra 4 pins are a seperate plug that hooks onto the other 20 pin connector. It's pretty neat.

i hate you shelby. you and your above average pay grade!
i have some shoddy taiwanese psu. manual was *surprisingly* detailed and well written. however, after checking reviews on the psu itself, i realized my mistake. its was supposed to burnout a month ago. its still doing ok, but now i have something to blame if my computer craps out.

the moral of the story is, ask the question and sleep easy

Its not a matter of a higher paygrade, its more of a matter that I choose computer parts over eating.

It's a wonderful diet! Every time you need new computer parts, eat nothing but ramen for a month. It's a win-win!
