I am shopping for a workstation. One model has Intel Xeon processors. An other model has AMD Opteron. I am looking for opinions of these two processors. If any other details are needed I will supply them here.

For the two models of workstations I am looking at, the one with Intel Xeon has a maximum of 3.8Ghz. The model with AMD Opteron has 3.0Ghz as the faster processor at this time. If I correctly understood what I read, all the Xeon processors are dual core.

Not all Xeon's are dual core.

I am sure you are right about not all Xeon's being dual core. I have heard that an AMD processor can be faster than an Intel with a higher Ghz. Is there any truth to this?

yes AMD is faster.. ex: the new AM2 5000+ or the fx-64,
both are faster then any Intel chip as far as i know..
i am a big AMD fan and think they are the best..

Thanks for your confirmation. Would I be happier with a 2.8Ghz AMD Opteron or a 3.6Ghz Xeon?

That is a personal preference. What is the workstation going to be used for?

Just so you know, the Xeon and the Opteron are the server class processors. Where as the P4 and the AM2 are your typical desktop processors.

This workstation will be used for photo editing, hopefullly video editing in the future, web design, and storage.

I had seen some servers with Xeon or Opteron so I guessed that they were server class processors. Is this to my advantage? Are they generally better than their PC counterparts?

of course there gonna be better. there made for transfering more data than a desktop processor. however, its not really something someone needs in there desktop unless they plan on using programs that really require that. cant think of any that comes to mind. however, even though im a fan of amd, with this selection i would have to go with xeon. its personal preference as stated above by grinch.
