I swear it has just happened recently, or I just haven't noticed. But in the last week or so especially my unit has been extremely slow - Firefox takes forever to load and switch between tabs. I don't have very many extensions running, and it never uses more than 100K memory. But it's slow to do anything at all. I generally have Firefox and iTunes running at the same time but it has gotten very bad lately. iTunes has crashed several times at random times. While running both applications a few days ago my computer literally just turned off for no reason.

My computer is a little over 2 years old, here are the specs:

HP Pavillion

Pentium 4 3.0ghz w/ Hyper Threading Technology
1GB RAM
200GB Hard Drive
128MB Video Memory
Intel Graphics Media Excelleraotr 9000
Double Layer DVD-RW 16x4x16 & CD-RW 40x24x40 Drive w/ Light Scribe
2nd CD Drive
3 PCi Expansion Slots
7 USB 2.0 Ports (3 front/ 4 back)
Inetgrated 10/100 Ethernet
Windows XP Home Edition

Is it just time to upgrade? More memory perhaps? I run Ad Aware constantly, use Ace Utilities to constantly clean the registry and delete temp files/ cookies/ etc... I also ran a virus scan and found nothing.

WTF?

Check the memory usage in the task manager both when those programs are running and when they are not.

you may try backing up all important files and whatnot(if you dont allready) then reinstalling windows. ive noticed that windows starts to go to *plum* after about 8 months :( so that could be the problem

Yeah I think I am going to try a fresh install. I already have everything backed up so I'll just start fresh.

That should be last resort. I call that hospital thinking, the doctor always wants to operate right away.

Well here's a new problem - the computer won't even start. Sounds like it is running extremely hard - it hums very loudly then dies. I wonder if I just need to buy a fan for this thing because it's just overheating?

The power supply may be shot. I've changed at least 6 of them over the last few years on various PCs and I just ordered one yesterday for someone else.

I just heard back from Best Buy - it appears the motherboard is fried. Looks like a new computer for me. DAMN!
