there are two paid tools that are very good:
spinrite
HDD Regenerator

I´ve recovered or detected bad sectors with spinrite and when they weren´t recovered i´ve partitioned that space (leaving the bad sectors in blank),very usefull tool.

here you can see the Chkdsk Syntax...but it´s not that good:

CheckDisk utility is not excluded from Windows XP. Open command prompt and type the drive letter(with colon) for which you want to do a scan. Like "D:" and then press enter. Now type "chkdsk" without quotes.
This may take some time.
You can do that another way and set a scanning schedule for next reboot so that Windows can attempt for recovery of bad sectors. Right-click on a drive(you should do for C: first) > Properties > Tools > Under "Error-checking" press "check now" and select both of the options "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors". You will be prompted to confirm the scan at next reboot.
