The best way to increase your ram is to buy more ram :)

Ram's pretty cheap these days. It's the same with hard drives. Why buy a 40Gig drive, run DriveSpace/DblSpace/Whatever it's called these days, to get 80Gig (with compression), and lose MUCH MUCH performance in your system, when you can spend another 15-20 bucks and get an 80Gig drive in the first place?

RAM's the same. Those applications that claim to compress data in the RAM in order to effectively "increase" the amount you have, they're all a trade-off. Your system runs slower because of the time it takes to compress & decompress the contents in the ram.

Your best bet is simply buying more ram :)

yeah, I got 512MB for my new PC a few months ago for $100, and just last week my dad bout 1024MB for his dinosaur of a computer for $130. It was PC3200 as well! There is no way that his dinosaur could possibly use all that so I'm thinking of pinching one stick of it.

So yeah, RAM is dirt cheap nowadays.

I do have 512(480) ram , i am happy with it.
i hared that increasing ram from 512 to 1024 wont make much differences as u increase from 128 to 512.

well when i put all the extra ram in my dad's dinosaur, (and took the old stick out) there was a HUGE speed increase. But if going from 512 to 1024 doesn't makes only a little difference, I might just borrow it...without asking...or plan to return.

Nah, he'd notice sooner or later that the bios was only counting 512mb, and then he'd take the cover off.

google for "memtest86"

decrease the timings and increase the fsb on the memory
run the memory through a memtest, if it passes, your overclocked memory has no errors
if it fails, lower the settings in the bios a little
run the test untill it passes

there are also some tweaks you can make to the windows xp registry to get the most out of your ram
Memory Performance Tweak
Unload .dlls to free memory
Increase speed by tweaking prefetcher settings

buying more/faster memory is also a good idea
