Hi

I've got a Sony Vaio in my workshop at the moment which was in for an overheating issue. I decided to do a thorough job and give the laptop the once over to make sure everything else is OK.

The model in question is a PCG-GRZ615M - P4 2.4Ghz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD

The actual amount of RAM showing on this laptop is 256MB - both in My Computer > Properties and in the system BIOS. However, the official spec is 512MB and upon opening up the little cover underneath, there are indeed 2 X 256MB modules installed.

I've reseated them, swapped them around and booted it up with one and the other. They both seem to work fine, in either slot, but when connected at the same time they only show 256MB.

Both memory modules are made by "Infineon" - model numbers HYS64D32020GDL-7-B, B2C30304 and PC2100S-2033-0-A1

I haven't got any spare DDR laptop RAM so I haven't tried any different stuff yet - I was just wondering if this was a known issue and if there is some sort of workaround or fix for it.

Any help much appreciated 8)

Cheers
Ju

Try running MemTest_86. It will show you the amount of ram also.

Laptop RAM is incompatible with a PC due to the difference in size.

I suggest you get in touch with Sony directly rather than fiddle with it yourself as you may end up voiding your warrenty.
