no sound windows xp

my friend has a computer and when he plugs in the headphones in the front of the computer and plays a cd there is no sound what could be wrong and how can this problem be fixed the computer came with windows xp and he has no internet access. can anyone tell me what to do to try to fix this problem

does he have sound at all? Make sure his cd player in the device properties has the cd Playback option enabled.

also, who built this computer? it could be (if only the front jack isn't working) that it was never plugged into the motherboard ... there are little "pins" that connect from the front panel onto the motherboard and if they're not plugged in the sound wouldn't work ... do the jacks at the back of the PC work?

with mine it only came out of one headphone so i moved the wires over one pin :P

yeh mine is, it;s more then likely it;s wired wrong or the wiring for some reason has gone, it doesnt take long to check
