hi guys, i have a sony laptop vaio that am almost sure has the floppy drive damaged, i tried diff. floppies, uninstalling/ reinstalling the controllers, i tried everything, but how would i know if it's the floppy drive or the connector on the mobo, it is a propietary drive therefore i couldn't use a diff. brand drive onto the laptop. i don't want to spend money on a new drive and then see the connector is bad on the mobo.
thanks.

When you uninstalled the drive, and then re-connected it, did the computer recognize the new hardware? If so I would think the connector is good. I don't know of anyway to test the drive itself short of taking it apart, and I wouldn't even know where to begin with that.

I am also asumming its an external floppy. If this is true could you not buy a USB floppy drive, I think they are pretty cheap.

Just some ideas

actually when i uninstalled the controllers in device manager and rebooted, the window "found new hardaware" came up, of course the floppy still didn't work but that is a great tip what you told me, so it all points to a "bad floppy drive".
it's an internal floppy drive.
thanks.

well, sony are propietary, i would have to find a sony laptop to test it, and going to a local store like "geeksquad" would mean paying just to test it, i think i will buy a new one anyway, thanks.

Throw and DOS boot disk and see if it will boot from it. Maybe it is an OS issue.
