Is it the motherboard or the cd drive?

I have a computer i built that has a old cd rom, new hard drive and a new motherboard and i have installed windows and everything but everytime i turn it on i have to have the windows cd in the cd rom for windows professional to load up and work? if any1 knows wats wrong please help.

That is a software issue and not really conducive of a hardware error.

However it is interesting nonetheless. What happens (in detail) when the disc isn't present in the drive? What error messages do you receive? Do you receive a software install prompt?

Please elaborate.

The first thing that comes to mind is check the jumper on your hard drive and make sure it is set to Master and your CD drive is set to slave. My suspicion is it's recognizing the CD drive as master and the hard drive as slave. Also are you using one IDE cable for both or each on a separate cable? Use one cable for both set into the primary controller.

hey i found out what it was it was the windows i installed but now its all good thanks anyway :D
