Thermal compound

hey ppl i just bought myself a new amd 3700+ and was wondering although the cpu comes with almost a square of chewing gum like semi solid material, do i need thermal compound on top of this or will the cpu be safe enough in my case bearing in mind i have 5 80mm fans in there

Since its an AMD, you should be fine just sticking with what's given. I believe I recently read in PC Gamer that thermal grease is mainly geared towards the Intel chips for some reason. Something to do with the subtle difference in materials. I also found this article online regarding AMD and thermal grease:

But in all honesty. Don't take my speculation as definite fact. Wait for other people to reply.

I have that CPU aswell and didnt even bother to use the thermal pad that came with the CPU. I used the AS5 straight away and have load temps around 37 degrees @ 2.9GHz
