How much of an increase in cooling, if any, would I expect to get from putting a thermal pad on a CPU fan?

Thermal pad ?
As in the solid copper plates you can sandwich between the CPU & heatsink ?

Anything other than thermal paste & a good heatsink between the CPU and the fan is a waste of money.

thats all i use and it works great. You shouldn't need to buy a heatsink, the stock heatsink and fan for P4 is decent enough. Unless you are going totaly nuts on overclocking.
