I had to reinstall the OS on this laptop (Toshiba Tecra 9100) . Tried Win XP but it came up with STOP 0x0000007B. Went back to recovery CD and that installed (Win2k) fine. However, after installation, it started the New Hardware wizard which tried to install drivers for the device UUUUUUUU UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - which it failed to do.
Device manager shows this under 'Other Devices'. with a yellow circle and ?.
I guess this might have been the reason for XP Stop (unknown device) but I have noi idea what this device might be or where it came from.

There is nothing hooked to the laptop except one network PC card (which is working fine) .
Anyone any idea what this phantom device might be?
Is it likely to have caused the XP STOP error
Assuming it is phantom, how do I get rid of it?

Don't know if this is related to the problem you are having. Quite honestly, your problem is a new one on me. I'll keep looking.

I solved the UUUU problem
It seems that on occasions Windows does not recognise the CD drive. Removing and re-inserting the drive causes 'New Hardware Found'; the UUUUUU device disappears and CR-ROM appears (in device manager).
I dont know if this was the cause of the XP stop problem - somewhere I looked suggested that it might be. However, I am now up and running and my curiosity does not extend to going back to replicate the situation!!!
Thanks for your interest
