virus from external hard drive

If I download something from the internet that could potentially have a virus, but save it to an external hard drive - and come to find out it does infact have a virus, will it be isolated to that hard drive or spread to my main hard drive?

If you don't execute it, it shouldn't propagate anywhere.

Just do a virus scan on it before running the program.
