i waz thinking about overclocking my CPU and Ram. i know how to overclock my Gfx Card (coolbits Lol) rather easy. anyway the thing i really want to overclock is my CPU. is there a way i can over clock it to about 3ghz. its a AMD athlon XP 2600 (2,100mhz) if 3ghz is to much, whats the max i can OC it? dont forget about the ram. ;)

i am just learning about OCing so if i sound stupid, dont laugh :)

What RAM do you have?
What type of cooling?
What motherboard?

The only way of knowing how far you can push your processor is by pushing it. Some processors have almost no headroom for overclocking where as others have a ton. The multiplier is locked on your processor so the only way to overclock it is to overclock the FSB (Front-Side Bus). The amount you can overclock this largely depends on your RAM, cooling, and pure luck.

It would depend on what stepping and when you bought the cpu to be able to find out if it will overclock well, personally 3.0 ghz out of that cpu ....not attainable without severe cooling if then.
You may get a good 200 mhz more outta it, but I wouldnt expect much else. easiest way is this go into your bios, up the fsb say it starts @ 200.....take it up to 201 reboot let windows load continue this till it freezes then back it off the same way, no way to know how high you can get on air cooling, or if it wont corrupt your os and you loose all data.

ram doesn't overclock separately, it will only operate at higher speeds due to a overclock of of the cpu, say u take your cpu to a fsb of 215mhz from 200 mhz. the ram will have to increase its speed accordingly to the speed of the cpu. It not exactly like that but basically people who overclock their cpus buy ram that runs at high speed, say pc 4000 ram instead of pc 3200. this allows them to overclock the cpu up to the speed of the ram, instead of overclocking the cpu and pushing slower ram to speeds it wasn't designed to run at. I not sure this is all correct information, but this is what i know from computer modding forums and such

Highest cpu you could get for your board would be the 3200+400 fsb.

But it is not fsb 400 yours is fsb 333 which is not running async with your ram hense a slower chip, your is actually spec'd at 1.91 so your running alil overclocked. The Nforce bios did this on my Nforce 2 board also, slightly overclocked the cpu without you knowing.

Meaning if it was running at spec it would be slower upping the fsb alil will not cause a great temperature increase or a noticable one at least. But never the less it is oc alil which will shorten the life of the cpu.

try looking for a EPOX-8RDA3+

been using it for two years, just sold it but has been serving me well... it has all the goods needed for overclocking :)

my previous system:
AMD Athlon XP2600+ Barton @ 2.2Ghz (~ 50ish degree celcius)
Gigabyte Heatpipe CPU Cooler
2x512MB DDR333 Trenscend
ATI Radeon 9600XT

otherwise go AMD64

my current system:
AMD Athlon64 3000+ SK754
Thermaltake Tower 102
FOXCONN NF4K8AB-RS
X600XT 256MB
2x512 MB DDR400

AMD64 is damn fast :)
