write-combining (WC) memory

Can anyone tell me anything about WC memory? I know that it's used to improve performance in graphics applications, but that's about it. What exactly is it? Does anyone know any of it's applications and how it improves performance? What is it's significance to someone who is writing the driver software that controls the video card in a PC? (How might they use it and take advantage of it to improve performance?)
