i notice in a lot of best buy and circuit city advertisment books in the router section they have a gaming one... it says it can be used with xbox live or ps2 etc. does this mean if i want to use xbox live i would hav to buy one of those routers? or can i use the one i have already for pc broadband connection.

As far as I know you can use any router to play xbox live. I saw a "gaming" router the other day and thought 'what a wonderful idea to make money'. I wish I would have thought of it first.
