I use 1&1 (got the freebie offer, which ended the 15th) and it's OK. The Google AdWords voucher helped, but that's all gone now. The just recently rennovated their control panel, so things are somewhat streamlined. I haven't had any problems with the website hosting, although I still have to work out the email. The domain name price has gone down to $0.49 per month (vs. foughly 50 cents), but I reccomend that if you can get a domain from these guys and get hosted somewhere else maybe.

UPDATE: I just looked in the help section and now I know what's wrong.

Instead of the normal pop3 address, the address is just pop, and your username starts with an m instead of a u. Other tricky things are on their site, but once it's working, it works.

wow, i've never seen such blatant spam in all my life. although even with spam I try to see how good the offer is, but you're hosting can't exactly be that great, if your site is down. I mean, if your site is down, what chances do you stand to keep my site up?

as for images being posted on forums, it would work temporarily if you changed the file name, but it wouldn't take long for them to become wise to it and change their filenames in their sigs or avatars or whatever. It would get extremely boring to keep changing the filenames every week so that all these forum users can't get at yoru images. Just set up the .htaccess thing.
