about use hosting coupun code

i like the low price of bluehost, when I'm looking for some data contrast of each webhosting supplier like bluehost 1&1 godaddy etc. it is a pity bluehost did not offer an coupon code 
but i searched a coupon code "50USDDOLLAR" used for dreamhost, said could save $50 on any plan, is it a scam?
How can a hosting just cost $8.95/month but a coupon code could make $50 discount? Someone else used the code before? also any experience with dreamhost?
And if i use the code, will it cause some adverse effect?
