there must be catch....

Thing is nucleo, can you afford to throw away $6 for a six month trial

At those prices, try em and see. Just host some crap on their server, and if everything goes ok with them, move your site over in a couple of months....

ahhh yes suzie, 2 years at $20 is far better than 1 year at $6.95

Anyway, why are hosting plans so much different in price? I was looking at wiserhosting who do a year for £20. Then I looked at the "99.5% uptime". Just did a quick sum - thats the best part of an hour down every single week lol.

Is that what you are paying for with the more expensive ones? Better uptime, and maybe more control over what you can do? I don't really know I'm just wondering...

dude thats lets than a fiver! You can't be that hard up?

As I said before, just host some stuff on there that you don't care about for the first little while, rather than waste time taking your site down transferring accross and then maybe having to move it all back again in a couple of weeks because this host turns out to be crap.

I think I'll be getting one of these accounts just to see.

Well i don't really know as i have none right now, my board is hosted on a friends server..it works!

But to your question, well, i guess its how much bandwidth comes into the equation, up and downtime too, ext and stuff, not everyone does fp ext, PHP, MYSqual, ASP, not everyone supports these either.

BUT, my friend had downtime at Easter he took a break, he will have downtime this week from tomorrow well, midnight tonight, hols and working on the board, that means i have downtime too...till the 3rd of may.

When you are just starting to get some traffic..me..this is not so good rtm223  so i have explained to my friend that although i will stick with him i must get some space for my board, another one, same idea sort of an ext of my other one, a board my members can get to in downtime of the other one, does this make sense..?

This can be a re-direct when my friend is down, so i think i'm decided on ukhost, seems a decent host, i was hunting out a new domain but i get that free.
:D
At tht end of the day look at the whole picture...then decide.

No I haven't sorted out hostimg for myself yet other than a couple of old geocities accounts i have - I use them for hosting pictures I want to post here :)

I think you get what you pay for mostly though. Like when you see the posts on here wanting free hosting, no adds and php support  How exactly are the hosting company supposed to pay for bandwidth & hardware etc!

I get why virtual hosting and dedicated hosting are so much more when you get full root access, complete control and all that, but the hosts nucleo mentioned - like £20 a month - I just don't get how that works when they don't seem to offer anything extra?

Maybe with the more expensive ones they have more php modules installed or something? I've noticed you never get to see this what is installed on the cheaper ones until you have signed up and can get phpinfo()....

I'm choosing uk host not only for my domain lolol but they have a choice of boards too, I just would'nt be able to manually upload the software myself so again ukhost seems the right one for me, at least in that respect!
Tomorrowi'll be learning how to skin a board..should be fun !

Quote:

never seen any without adds, i would'nt even go there, lolol at what some people demand of a free host !! if they can find it let em post here
As for nucleo, well, he will decide his own fate in due course..if he goes to that $1 host..or he'll end up lol at us rtm223!

I'm gonna buy me a $1 host (it might be the $2 one i need actually) just as a temp host for a site someones got me building. I'm gonna have a production version that isn't crawlable, just so they can see what it looks like.

I'll let people know how it goes with that host - but I don't have too high hopes.

Does ukhost not allow you to upload a board, or is it just that you dont have to do your own? Do you know anyone who is already with ukhost?

BTW always strikes me as strange how the verb "to skin" in the real world means to take the skin off, in computer terms means to put a skin on something..... :?

As someone who has tried some of these kinds of hosts I've found they dont last long because they dont make any money and hosting costs for the person running things is not cheap. I now use powweb because they are so reliable.

It comes down to the question of whether you want cheap and nasty hosting or pay more and get what you pay for ;)

Just because it is cheap it does not mean it is nasty. I have been with yrhost (http://www.yrhost.com) for quite a while now, and i have found them to be extremly reliable and excellent value for money.

The expensive are not always the best either.

However i do admit that it is always best to be cautious, but if you dont try it out you will never know. And may end up paying more then other people

Looks good tone but as i don't use credit cards i'm afraid i could'nt go with them..shame it does seem ok too, i would have gone $25 dollar one cus i have $20 here i'm not using at the minute...should get it changed back again.
:)

ukhost will accept a chq also they are in the uk in Fife, so i think decision is made for me..sending the chq today, hope to be up and running by mid week...probably sooner!

Musik - I just had a look at powweb and that looks like a pretty sweet deal to me, about £50 a year. Can you pay monthly or is it one of those deals where they advertise price per month then expect you to pay for the whole year in advance....

Back onto the cheap and nasty topic, is there a simple awy to monitor down time on your site? Ie requesting a dummy file every half hour or something?
Any programs that will do this for you?

I need to get a bulk sum together, then open a bank account, then wire it to paypal

there is a lot more i need to consider

also
ukhost comes with cpannel, that is a great feature, and a great way to install scripts for your site

nucleo,

I gathered this:
Quote:
So is it a coincidence that jc-host.com is registered to a "Jack Collier" ?
but i saw nothing else really to get me to move to that host ! other than them saying its cheap, but whats cheap, i could buy a fur coat at a second hand shop, falls apart next day..well it was cheap lolol but if i go to harrods and buy a simular fur coat i can guarantee i'll have that coat for many years to come, hence "you get what you pay for".

i am also considering as my new site (wedding designs) is currently at http://www.members.aol.com/weddingdesig But it is now nearly finished and so i will need a host in the uk, and they seem pretty cheap and they also provide unlimited sumdomains which is what i need to host my customers sites on.

Just checking a couple of things:
1)whether the gig of space is shared between the multiple domains or each - shared as I thought, but no harm in trying!
(although they have just updated their site and you get double the bandwidth for the two domain one)

2)How much you have to pay for the backup (£10/yr) and the server uptime SLA. The answer to the latter was:
Quote:
there is a list of different SLA aggreements on the signup page

so I have to sign up to find out how much that is

3)Do you get .htaccess: yes

4)can I see a phpinfo page to see what php modules they have installed (no reply to that one - Suzie do me a favour and make a php info page for me when you get your site, and then gimme a link :D pweeese)

5)I just sent them another email asking if they do ssl cos there's no mention of it anywhere even though they do eComerce scripts :?

Ooh, bad move getting the credit card tony

i think that the thing that allows you to add php bla bla bla is called Fantastico, i have got it with my old domain (ghostorbsociety) and it is really good, i got a php image page where people can upload pictures etc.

and i also installed a forum with the click of a button.

http://www.yrhost.com/index_fantastico.php thats thelink so you can see a description of the things that it can install

well jc is the possibly dodgey one who is very cheap, but our new friend has had a good experience ( ) with him
ukhost is who suzie is with, and I am now looking at.
I mentioned wiserhosting at some point, but I think ukhost is possibly better
Powweb are the expensive (comparatively anyway) one, who Musik/Rose is with, that I can't really justify the cost of now.

Pay attention, it's all quite simple really :D

Come on guys... Im not the owner... Just browsing search engines, with Jc Host on, just to see their rep and I see this site. I know the admin very well from the forums and he seems fine... Why do you think he is dodgey?

Ahh the good old days at powweb (that is ipowerweb.com?) rofl... Thaught JC would be alot cheaper, and more reliable, which I have to say, is that at the moment. No troubles at all!, but if you guys are members there yourself, then I dont know what the hell your on about... maybe you have some personal issues... I don't know. ROFL! :)

I like these forums... Think ill fit in well here. :) BTW whats participation? Post count? :P

I had a mail from them this afternoon, "we would like to confirm your domain is this..is it correct please" replied yes thats correct but have you recived my packet with the chq....silence for about 1 hour lolol next e-mail "yes the packet has now arrived your hosting e-mail will arrive soon..waits another short time, my welcome e-mail arrives.
not bad eh gang !!
But, i can't do anything as yet till the doman evolves, about 24 hrs or a little longer so now i wait...could be 72 hrs.
First i want to put CashBack's mind at rest, CashBack, if it works for you, and it feels right, then you stay there!

Thats fair enough, I'm just wary of things that are cheap and I don't like people who aren't honest. I'm glad you have a good deal and maybe I'm just being dumb for not going with him....

Like I said I was just messing with ya.

Participation roughly equate to posts (in that you get 1 point for each post you make). You can then go and spend these points at 25 a time in the "activities" section (games) or you can play the lottery and get some extra ones. :)

Wonder how cashback is feeling about his decision to host with jc-host today.

the jc-host server has been down for more than 24 hours straight apparently for a system upgrade???

Yeah...

System upgrade, to make the server MORE stable than it already is. He scheduled this, so there is no problem.

Buffing up security! I like it!! :)

there's not a single reason for a server to be down to upgrade security,
with the exception of restarting the server. That takes all of 1.5min.

I'm not happy about 5min downtime at any point for any reason, not
even a scheduled one. This is where I always say experience and service
MATTERS 100%.

You absolutely get what you pay for.

I would be asking why it goes down for so long??

hardware upgrade: 1-2 hours tops
Complete Reinstall OS: maybe 3 hours (with config as well)
server totally screwwed and the guy doesn't know what he's doing with it: 2 days. :D

Exactly. Security upgrade might slow performance for a bit during install then need a reboot, but two days? Is he coding the new security features himself? lmao

a service that goes down at all, is not a good service -- PERIOD. In
today's hosting world, there's very little to cause hosting to be down so
long other than user discretion or lack of education in providing the
service.
Quote:

this is a crock, and whatever he's feeding you, stop taking it. This is
completely unacceptable, just ask anyone who has experienced good
service. 1 single hour, is unacceptable, let alone 48+. I wouldn't stand
for it on a FREE service! And that's precisely why I spent the few extra
dollars each month on hosting fees rather than worrying so much about
downtime or when it might go down. Now, since I run my own servers,
it's obviously not an issue because I take care if it all myself.
Quote:
Im still happy with my choice..

good for you - Sorry mate, but bragging about downtime as a good
thing? makes no sense to me. But what do I know, my sites haven't
been down for more than 5min in more than 6 months.

I guess service is where it's at, right?

I think that he is the person that posted in that forum. The owner of the hosting company.

Anyone else would be pissed if the server was down for ages! I know i would i dont care how cheap it is.

If i was running a business 2days without my site i could lose £100's of pounds. .. And you are saying you are happy? Are you crazy??

You should send you host an email, we will all recomend you for selling his services to other people becasue you are doing a good job on this thread.

lmfao you fool. So he told you it was an upgrade and now it's legal investigations. Nice. I would never do any business with anyone who blantently lies to me. I worked for two years in customer service and that is shocking. The whole lying thing is a bit a continuing theme here I think

The truth is $30-$40 is not much to pay for a proper host where you get treated like a respected customer and you get less downtime in a whole year than you got in a single week.

Please yourself buddy, but you ain't gonna sell this product to anyone unless they are desperate for a host.

Well, I have got the hosting at ukhost4u

comes with nice features, but i screwed up the buying lol, I bought the pan above the one i wanted, so i bought the business plan, £49.99 per year lo

got me http://www.nucleo.co.uk to go with it :D

well, the business plan gave me this (quick rundown of basics)

Subdomains: 0 / unlimited
Parked Domains: 0 / 3
Addon Domains: 0 / 3
MySQL Databases: 0 / unlimited
Disk usage: 8.95 / 1000.00 MB
SQL Disk usage: 0.00 MB
Disk space available: 991.05 MB
Bandwidth usage (current month): 0.00 / 75000 MB
Email Accounts: 0 / unlimited
Email forwarders: 0 / unlimited
Autoresponders: 0 / unlimited
Email filters: 0 / unlimited
Mailing Lists: 0 / unlimited
FTP accounts: 0 / unlimited

not bad, way too much bandwidth, so i think i will use the site for me, and some hosting of files, in return for ad space :D
(so anyone need some files hosting, in return for adspace, let me know)

Maybe you can ask if you can downgrade the account - you can upgrade, I checked because I will be wanting to host three sites within the next few months but couldn't afford the business plan just yet.

It can't hurt to ask, although it's up to you.

Well done nucleo, i took the advanced, wasted a domain that came free lolol
I then bought two more domains, i'm now starting to get some members, plenty guests i asked my co-admin, he thinks they are spider visits!
nucleo, ukhosts are pretty flexable, no harm in asking for a down grade, but at least now you have fully paid up!
tone, hi, you can send a chq, as signed for 95 pence charge, they recived mine the next day, they don't do visa electron, i have that card!

"accused", cashback. Did I accuse you anywhere in that post? The word "he" was used to refer to a third party. You are trying to sell this product to us though. And selling does not mean you are selling your own product you can try to sell someone else's service.

You have been accused of nothing by me. If you feel that way maybe you have a guilty concience lol  only joking.

anyone else catch that jc was down from friday until today. uptime gets worse and worse.... some people still dont have their site runing yet. server keeps going up and down. this time he blames it on a kiddie porn file that makes his internet service get cut off then they make him change hard drives on the server.

seriously is any other host as trippy as him?

Right now, half of the sites are STILL down.

It's been over 3 weeks now...I finally quit on Jc-host.

Support there sucks. The forums were taken down, apparently the admin thinks people wanting answers is actually spam. :/

So since the forums were down, I emailed him, what happens?
No reply. And he was online and around...starting new auctions on Ebay for hosting as well as posting on his personal site.

Now I know why its so cheap. Quality is cheap as well.

For anyone who ever conciders Jc-host
check out this site, which was made by another former jc-host member...

http://jc-host.hakosoftware.com/

Jack (the owner of Jc-host) doesn't like that site...

I own a hosting company and I can sell excellent quality hosting for a very low price. Sometimes I feel I should raise the price so that people will actually belive that is a legitimate deal some people may be leery sometimes because they get allot for just a little so I cant really speculate on what another hosting companies reliability is on something like that. I have always found a majority of the time that if it is to good to be true it probaly is. Then on the otherhand If I give a low low price someone could then say the same thing about my company I know we provide an excellent service. I know our guide liness and policies a majority of my existing Clients Stay with us year after year. But You being a concerned customer of course would be a little leary and if you weren't I would figure you were up to something. So it comes down all on trusting your gut feeling on this one should you go ahead and bye? Or should you shop around? Then there is allways lifes little lessons of paying for our mistakes god knows its cost me an arm and a leg. But I can say that I have allways learned a lesson when ever it has cost me money. Lucky enough if you cant find any real negative feedback from this company, and don't get me wrong I would love to earn your business as well. but if they offer the package that you want and its a price that you happy with paying and it's not gonna hurt you if you do end up loosing it. I say go for it, try them out and see how they are. Mabey I have helped you shed some light on your discision and hopefuly not woried you more.
