Im by no means an expert on this whole server thing, more likely a copy-paste step-by-step user :D

I have a website that has an average of 400 members online on rush hours at the same time, its a vbulletin mostly what draws the load off the server.

Right now is beeing hosted on a Raq4, paying $150 EU ($220 USD) a month aprox.

Wanted to ask here for a second oppinion, on this. Im thinking of going up to a Raq 550 but wanted to see if there is a better option such as a windows server or so...

ANY help will be appreciated!

220 USD

For that price you can get a powerful dual xeon, with the 2.6 kernel from dedicatednow.com

The 2.6 kernel has better performance for HT.

VB can get pretty resource intensive - and I dont just mean bandwith. I would try to stay away from the cheapest dedicated provider you can find - though, obviously, you have a budget to work with.

What level of server management do you require? or do you do it all yourself? Why are you looking to upgrade? Are you finding lags in your current performance? Are you happy with your current provider?

As a general rule of thumb, if youre happy with your provider, and you need to upgrade, stick with them, even if there are better options out there. Good hosts are hard to find, and if you have found one that works for you - sticking around would be a good idea :)

For VB - try to get as much RAM as your budget allows for - this is even more important then CPU (though, you dont want to be running a PIII either is you can help it :)

Hope this helps...

Hello,

I cannot say i am a beginner nor expert.

I used ev1, managed and servermatrix, and here is my comment for them.

ev1: high price, high-end server parts, reliable hosting, suggest for serious business.

managed: low price, but also desktop parts, terrible service, offer you large dramaticially down time. I suggest people use it for testing, learning purpose only.

servermatrix: resonable price, desktop parts, reliable connection. So far I have no problem with this host, and I am still using it over 1 year. Suggested.

I wish this info can help you.
