I wanted to have SSL but for my webhost it would cost me $55, I was wondering if I could just create a ssl cert and add it into my site?

because I did that with my test computer with openssl, but Im assuming it would be above my privileges with my webhost

Even if your host allows you to install a Cert (unlikely) you are still going to need to get a Dedicated IP from them.

You can most certainly use a self signed certificate created with openssl. You will need a dedicated ip address and most likely some assistance from your hosting provider.

Of course with a self signed certificate visitors to your site will receive a browser warning message that the certificate has been "issued by someone you have not chosen to trust", until they choose to install the certificate locally via their web browser.

There is a certificate issued by GeoTrust that's under $40. I don't recommend using self-signed certificates, the resulting security warning will often turn people away.
