Hi,
I have a website designed, created and ready to upload. It's only about 8 pages and about 7MB. It's just a portfolio website, nothing complex, no database stuff etc.

I need to get a chosen domain name for the person whose site it is and webspace to upload this site to.

I've never purchased either of those before, I don't even know what to select in the options I've checked out. I'm kinda lost in the mire. Can anyone advise me on getting a .co.uk domain name and space to load the site onto. I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

Thanks

C.

Hi,
I thought I'd take the advice of getting the domain name independently of the webspace. Where to get the webspace I've decided now, so just the .co.uk name to register first.

Any advice on how/where to register a domain name? Again, I'm a bit overawed by webs searches

Thanks

Hi,
I'm a tad confused about all this. I have created a site for someone which is just on my ISP's free webspace at the moment but she wants her own company domain name and the site needs its own home to move to. One with no banners etc, too.

I was advised to get the domain name separately from the webspace provider, to avoid them delaying things (?) if the site was moved again at some point. Can the company with the site on their server not still hold things up if it's moved, even though the domain name registration was not done through them? I'm not sure how getting it elsewhare avoids that.

I have selected the company from which to get her webspace (a recommendation from an Ozzu member :-) )

I need now to get the domain name. From what I can tell, I just go to some other company offering both webspace and domain name registration and get only the domain name from them... does that sound right?

Once I have both, how do I apply the registered domain name to the site in the new webspace?

As it's not my site nor my money, I don't want to screw things up by making bad decisions here. I will soon have another site done which will also need the same stuff set up.

I've developed numerous sites but either just to be uploaded onto folks' ISP-included webspace, which is straightforward, and for university and medical institutions who had all that set up, I just redesigned their sites and uploaded them, I didn't have to deal with getting server space or domain name registrations, so those bits are new to me.

I'm kinda scared of making a hash of it by choosing badly or overlooking something.

Thanks,

C

madmonk: go daddy is really neat. go get it.
-- cheap yes... neat. NO!

the biggest place to get domain names from is http://www.enom.com; although i personally prefer http://www.namecheap.com because they accept paypal and their support is excellent.

webhosting: http://www.phpservers.com. i wont say anymore because it would be self promotion.
