ok... i purchased 2 domain names from 1and1.com

on the page where i can change the DNS settings for the domain names, theres 4 fields to fill in...

1)Primary name server
2)Secondary Name server
3)Secondary Name server
4)Secondary Name server

so.. theres 3 secondary name server fields... well, I tried filling in only 1) and 2) and left 3) and 4) blank only to result to a domain update error. :( I am stuck.

You should just be able to enter the first two.

If the 3rd & 4th fields are both labelled seconary, then just pop your secondary DNS address in those too :)

If it's still not working, just pop 1and1 an E-Mail. There may be a problem they're not aware of.

Name servers are typically going to be similar to

ns1.yourhostsname.com
ns2.yourhostsname.com
ns3.yourhostsname.com
ns4.yourhostsname.com

although they may vary depending on the host.

What are you trying to put in their? Your own domain names? That's not what you use. You need to find out from your host what their DNS server names are. Some may only have two -- that's fine. Others may have three or four. Only the first two are essential.

You can usually find these name servers listed in the hosts FAQ's or their tech support area.

His DNS servers are ns.myprohost.com and ns2.myprohost.com.

It's his registrar where he's having trouble entering them.

I see -- then this is the answer to the question -- in particular the very last sentence.

http://faq.1and1.com/miscellaneous_questions/12.html

Neither name server (ns.myprohost.com, nor ns2.myprohost.com) has Reverse Pointer Records. You can test this for yourself by following the instructions in the above link.

Unfortunately with 1and1 :

Quote:
If the IP address resolves back to the domain of the dns server, then this can be used as a name server, if not then you can not use this as a name server

myprohost.com needs to add PTR records in the reverse lookup for this to be possible.

Yup, the reverse pointer was indeed the problem.

I've never encountered this one myself with them (Godaddy doesn't have this particular policy in place that 1and1 does), but I did point them to this thread, and they got right on the case.

The DNS should be propagated within the next couple of days, and then you should be able to add them no problem.
