So whats the point of it, unless you own the server if your site goes down there's nothing you can do about it and all hosting companies I know monitor their own serers anyway.

Most free services only monitor in 30/60 minute intervals. In that much time a site/server could be down/up more times than an express elevator. Moreover a site/server could have recovered from an outage and you would not know about it for another 30/60 minutes. Even if the outage lasted 5 mins or less it will still be reported as a 25/55 min outage because the interval is so long.
