im using guild ftp and w/ a cliient trying to connect by typing the ip address of the computer running the ftp server.
This only works locally (when i type in the local ip from a local computer)

your ISP might be blocking port 21 to prevent you from running an ftp server, try using a different port

This could be wrong but... I think you need to enter your external IP address of the network... Or you could try setting up your firewall to allow connections to port 21.

I think you should work from your system first. If you have a firewall installed it will block access to the computer

yup ... try what these guys said ...

but u might also want to check out Bullet Proof FTP Server, i personally use it and i recommend it for its simplicity :)

in terms of u're problem ... the only other thing i think is hindering a connection to the ftp server is the thatu could be using u're internal ip ... rather than u're external ip...

whats u're external ip :: http://www.whatismyip.com/

hope this helps ...

Yea I have used BulletProof ftp server alot in the past and the main thing you have to beat into people trying to access it , is that everything is CASE SENSITIVE.

To many times you pound your head into the keyboard trying to trouble shoot them not getting in only to see " oh I shoulda used a CAPITAL there huh .... sorry"

BulletProof is very easy to use and nothing is hard to find for the person setting it up 8)
