Hi all,

I am trying to start up a message board and have some questions.

I'm looking for a web host that will allow me to purchase one of their starter packages but will include Invision Board. I'd like to get the message board started but won't need a lot of space until it starts to get popular.

I have been looking at the packages offered by http://www.canaca.com
They won't offer Invision Board until the Gold Package. I would rather not pay over $100 CAN for three months until I know the message board is going to be popular. Anyone know of a web host that will offer me a starter package with Invision Board? Or better yet, a web host that will allow me to pick and choose what I need for my site and then determine a price?

My next question is about transfer bandwidth. If my message board turns out to be as popular as I'm hoping (over 10,000 visits daily), what kind of file transfer size would I need for each month? The Gold Package I was looking at gives 120gigs. Not sure what would really be necessary.

Thanks all for your time.

I do not want this sounding too much like self promotion but since you asked our budget package comes with invisonboard.

Maybe that will work for you.

You will be able to install an Invision board with any host that offers Fantastico. With Fantastico your invision board installation would take less than 3 minutes.

Thanks all. You've given me a lot to work with.

What about bandwidth? Any guesses on a message board that receives about 500-1000 posts daily. And 10-20,000 visits daily?
The message board will not host avatars or other pictures. Those will have to be hosted elsewhere. It will all be text.

Any guess please?
I'm looking at a 60 gig bandwidth package now and it looks promising.

Best is to start with around 60gb and then if you start using more you can just upgrade. Most of the hosts like us will let you upgrade your account at no additional setup fee.

Thanks for the help guys.

I can't look at my past statistics because I don't have any...

I'm glad 80 gigs should be enough. I had one host tell me that a site that receives 10-20,000 visits and 500+posts a day would require a dedicated server... I think I was getting played ><

Hosts providing Fantastico will do the trick for you no problems. Also I noticed that the figure 60GB was recommended. Well that is fine for a board that is developed with a large amount of visitors per day but don't forget everything needs to start small. A basic package that provides something along the lines of 6GB would be more what you were looking for your first few months I would have said. Have a look around and feel free to PM me if you need any help with anything else ok. Out of interest how come you have chosen invision? (If you looked at my site I would suggest only choosing LiteBlue for now there is no need in spending excess amounts of money)

Well, I had read that invision was a nicer BB program than phpBB. I've actually decided that either would be fine. I'd be perfectly happy with phpBB.

I was looking at this host:

http://www.existhosting.com

They offer 2,500megs storage and 60 gigs bandwidth for only 9.95 a month.

Any thoughts on them? So far it's the best bang for my buck that I've found. I've also talked with someone that says they are very happy with them.

I wanted to point out that fantastico is not necessary to install any
board, and certainly is not the only available autoinstaller. cPanel alone
will install phpBB, invision, osCommerce, etc etc...the packaging simply
has to be set up that way. In the scripts library is where you will find all
the extras. Bulletin Board in cPanel is the default install for phpBB.

What it all comes down to when searching for a host is quality. Like
anything in life, you get what you pay for.
