I sign a contract with a small hosting company in Vietnam. This company is just a reseller of a large company in the USA, and they did not tell me the name of the company in the US.
Unluckily, this small company has disappeared. Now I want to forward my domain to the dot5.com or globat.com, but I can not.
Can anybody tell me how to find out the name of my current host so that I can contact them?
Thanks a lot!

It would be helpful if you told us the domain name :)

It helps to have shell access at one or more of the 13 root nameservers. :)

Aside from that....

Take the domain name, do a whois query. I do this to verify the person asking actually matches the information I find. ;)
I also run command line whois queries on my FBSD boxes -- they do deep searches by default.

Then I run dig on the domain name. Comes up with cached IP.

Then I run whois -h whois.arin.net <IP>

And it shows me who actually owns the netblock. Cuts out the middle man of finding out who resells for whom, who resells for whom.

The next step is really just to bring the whole thing back into full circle.
Ifyou have been playing along with the home version of the game, you'll see a section on the last whois regarding a netblock breakdown if you contact the rwhois owned by GNAX. This is done by groups which own large netblocks and "rent" out address space.
The results of a lookup on GNAX's rhwois;
Code: [ Select ]
root@FOO:~# telnet rwhois.gnax.net 4321
Trying 209.51.128.40...
Connected to rwhois.gnax.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
%rwhois V-1.5:003fff:00 rwhois.gnax.net (by Network Solutions, Inc. V-1.5.7.3)

network:Auth-Area:63.247.64.0/19
network:Network-Name:VSHosting-631
network:IP-Network:63.247.85.240/29

network:Admin-Contact;I:engineering@gnax.net
network:Created:20031114
network:Updated:20031114
network:Updated-By:hostmaster@gnax.net

%ok
  1. root@FOO:~# telnet rwhois.gnax.net 4321

You will note the name of the company that this person uses 'VSHosting' duplicated in the resource record of the initial lookup (whois) of his domain. Full circle.

It's really that simple.

All you need to od to use your domain on a new host is to change the nameservers at your domain registrar.
