Post 3+ Months Ago

A few years ago somebody beat me on a domain I still would like to buy, and I know for a fact that he lost interest in it (or so I think) and that he might not even remember to renew it. The domain expires around Christmas this year...

How soon after expiration date can I go and buy the domain, provided he did not renew the domain for another year/s...?

It depends, sometimes it can take a while for it to become available, generally this does not happen on that exact day it expires.

You can backorder domains, although I am not sure how reliable that service is.

Apparently once a domain expires it becomes the property(for lack of a better word) of the registration company that last issued it. They control the domain and are allowed a 'grace period' to try and spam the previous owner trying to get them to renew before they have to let release it so that it's open to anyone to register.

That grace period can be be months. I tried to get a domain I had been watching for a while. I tried to get it everyday for 3 weeks after it expired, I even tried to contact the company that had control of it offering to register it through them directly.

After about 3 month they finally renewed and currently they got 13 months before I get to start this all over again. :D

I know its a risk of just remidning him to renew but you could offer him money to sell on the domain to you?

45 - 60 days is the norm. The entire expring domain process is covered here:
