I am currently hosting with Media Temple on 3 of their Cluster Servers. While I don't really have any problems with them I wonder if what they offer is best for me.

I have about 12 installs of wordpress, 2 installs of slide show pro director and one of ajaxplorer. with about 405 sessions a week so not too horribly heavy on traffic. I like their gui control panel but I wish they had an easy way to do a back up.

Any suggestions out there on what type of server with what types of features I should be looking at and who are some good suppliers?

Thanks in advance.

I've used media temple for about two weeks before I cancelled my account. The main reason I cancelled was because I like to do all a lot of my work via the command line and MT didn't let me do that. I have an account at Web Faction which doesn't nearly have all the features that MT has but thats because they give there users a lot more freedom when it comes to shell access. Right now I run a VPS box at Mosso.

Are you willing to dive into the command line on your server? If you are you can setup a really simple backup system in 15 minutes. All it takes is a few lines of code. Basically what you would do is create a cron command that would tarball and gunzip (archive and compress) your data. If I remember right MT doesn't give you command line access to the mysql server, so you wouldnt be able to dump a mysql backup with the command line. Instead you would have to write a small script (python would be the easiest) that would make a sql dump.

I don't really know of any other services really as I've been slowly moving closer to running a dedicated server, and dont really pay attention to the software that comes with hosting but more the hardware.

Thanks Spoof,
I am not against learning command line, but I would prefer not to have to. I like the GUI control panel for creating email accounts and creating/managing databases. I guess if I got a lot better hardware/service for less and lost that I would learn to make do.

The problem is when it comes to hardware/software/services I am really not that sure what I am looking for.

Hello!
I just would like to share my view to this situation. For the number of the web sites you have and using especially for the wordpress you'd better consider the opportunity of having some specialised web hosting account like espinda.com or maiahost.com offer or simply from that list (wordpress.org/hosting)?

But I have seen you were talking about hardware so possible you will need dedicated severs instead? Maybe something from the planet.com or centsi.com would be fine as they give you opportunity to grab your server yourself.

Actually 2 ways are possible abd in both cases you can get in touch with the service providers and maybe ask them questions to get understanding of what you need. I belive they will be able to recommend you something
