i've got a phpBB forum (with mySQL and php and apache) up and running on a fixed ip. I've recently paid for a .com name at http://www.dotster.com/ to go with it and make it more public. I'm hosting it off my own server at my shop, but i don't know what/how to set up the nameserver.

my isp (bellsouth.net) has got me on hold for 2 hours now, and i'm not sure they'll ever answer.

1. is the nameServer something i can setup myself on my server or is it like url forwarding that has to be done by my isp.

i've scoured this site (and search fctn) for info, and the closest thread i think i've found is this one: http://www.ozzu.com/hosting-forum/multiple-sites-with-apache2-t27702.html&hi ... nameserver

i did an nsLookup @ the prompt and got:

DNS request timed out
timeout was 2 seconds.
***Cant' find server name for address 234.0.0.218: Timed out
Address: 205.152.144.23

even thought my fixed (static) ip is 65.6.181.180 (
http://65.6.181.180/phpBB2/index.php )
thanx for any help in advance

Setting up a bind server -- for someone who has never maintained DNS before -- is not trivial. I suggest you use a name service (there are probably many people on here who can point you in that direction). If you own a domain, and you own an IP it should not be very difficult to have someone host (resolve) the domain for you.
Perhaps -- and I am not sure of this -- BellSouth may provide that service, for a fee of course. Again, I am not certain of that.

Of course, you can run bind on that box if you wish, and provide NS for your domain.

Good luck!

Cheers.

appreciate the reply.

finally got thru to bellsouth....they say because its a residential dsl account, they cant help me.

signed up for url forwarding, but there again, they don't want fixed ip addresses (i'm really making a mess of this)

could you point me in the right direction for binding?

What you could do is to use your Registrar's DNS service which most proivide...

all you have to do is to add an A entry using your static ip address...

its going to be more of a hassle to setup your own nameservers just for that.

thanx all for the help....tech guy tried to tell me nameServer was dns.bellsouth.net or mia.bellsouth.net both of which i tried (and failed the registry change) , BUT....

a whois search on my URL showed me what the nameServers for bellsouth.net are (ns.bellsouth.net and atl.ns.bellsouth.net) ...AND...the URL forwarding i paid for and hardcoded the ip in seams to be working also (cuz i pointed to the index.php page which is not the stock index.html page in the apacheRoot folder )

didn't turn out too crazy for me after all...glad i still have some hair left

maybe.... dns.mia.bellsouth.net ? ;)

C:\ping dns.mia.bellsouth.net

Pinging dns.mia.bellsouth.net [205.152.144.23] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 205.152.144.23: bytes=32 time=65ms TTL=114

lol :D

Even if it's an old post, it's never hurts to bring up nameserver questions.
