well, you could always use phpBB which is a free software that most hosts should offer, i know we do. But i would strongly recommend vBulletin if you can afford the license. It's just a better built forum script.

As you seem to be new to the whole thing, Do not dive in at the deep end and go to VB, Use phpbb

Most hosts offer Fantistico on the hosting account, Using fantistico you can install PHPBB2 Version: 2.0.22

Or go to http://www.phpbb.com and download PHPBB2 or PHPBB3

As it has been said above you will need a phpbb shared hosting plan from a host who is able to support it. Make sure the host isn't overselling, as you don't want to have a huge number of packafes neigghbouring your site on the server. I will recommend you someone who is big and experienced enough but without overselling, someone like MediaTemple.com or ServerPoint.com.

Penguin, phpBB is good but i would think that VB would offer more flexability and security. Sure phpBB can easily be managed, but it would seem that script is hacked more then other forum scripts. Just my opinion though =]

This person seems new to forums and webdesign, What would be the point in paying for VB, when HE / ShE could try PHPBB and iff it is a success the move on to VB.

"making a cool logo" -- digital art design $100/hr
"having accounts for people" custom programming -- $120/hr
"how to make a good forum" SEO and dedicated posters/moderators -- price unknown.

" if you could help that would be cool" a.k.a seeing her react to your perfect gift? Priceless

Also, for a busy forum, you need to watch out for the data transfer limit. So you don't get charged for a lot of page views.

unlimited can be iffy though, as there are thin lines that determine "unlimited", etc.. =]

Unlimited ( Most of the time ) = exceptable usage policy......This is set by some hosts.

Or sometimes Unlimited means unlimited. If you do get UNLIMITED Make sure you read the hosts CPU usage T.O.S

Why not go for a CMS, like Joomla, and run Fireboard.

I run a gaming site for Ultima Online and decided to move to that.

Joomla offers quite a bit for gaming sites.

If you have any questions regarding Joomla and Fireboard, PM me.

Unlimited never means unlimited. It's not possibly for a host to provide unlimited bandwidth, even if they wanted to, because they themselves have limits. They can offer a lot - often enough to be, for all intensive purposes, "unlimited," but there is always a limit.
