i am using a free host (im poor), 100webspace i think and when i edit a file through the file manager it changes the permission from 644 to 755. i was told before that i should have my files at 644. can someone please explain the difference between the two, and is it alright (safe) to keep it at 755?

Each number is an octal representation of a binary number with each bit location referencing a different permission.

755 equates to 111 101 101, which in-turn turns on or off the bits for the three main (and basic) realms (if you will) of file permission.

Owner Group Other
r w x r - x r - x

Where r = Read
w = Write
x = Execute

So at 755 The owner, group and other (everyone else) can read and execute while only the owner may write the file.
