I run a bunch of websites off of a dedicated Interland server and recently tried (unsuccessfully) to use the .htaccess and .htpasswd files on one site. The user/password popup kept coming but it wouldn't accept the password I was supposed to put in.

So after deleting the files in the folder I tried to bring up the site, but the popup keeps coming up. I then moved all my important files out of the folder and tried to delete the whole thing since the rest of the site still works, but no luck. It won't let me delete the folder, but it will let me delete all the files inside it.

I've done all of this through CuteFTP because telnetting to the ip doesn't work at Interland for some reason. I was wondering if anyone could help on this.

And it's a Linux server with Plesk.

thanks,
xor

Just out of curiosity, how did you make the username/password combination?

You know you have to use htpasswd, right? (Provided you're using Apache)
(Found in the same dir as httpd).

Don't know much about dashboards like Plesk though, and it probably won't let you delete the dir with the dot file still in there.

Cheers.

Daemonguy I believe has nailed it..

You cant really delete a .htaccess via frp - try overwriting with a blank .htaccess (or at least one revised with the parameters you would like to use)

I get lucky, from time to time. :)

If the problem is isolated to one protected directory on one domain then try the aforementioned. If the problem applies to multiple protected directories across multiple domains then restart apache. Sometimes it stalls and serves up unprotected pages fine but when you try to enter a protected directory the login box appears and/or allows you to enter the credentials. Howver then nothing else happens.
