I dont think moving the file to member area for free registeration will use less bandwidth you need to request more bandwidth or add the file in another place where users can download without using your bandwidth

If no one is downloading the pic.s they will not use up your bandwidth so if he makes it exclusive to members this surely will reduce the access to it and then the bandwidth used up

It's working the link is broken. Why would using cPanel to set up the hotlinking protection cause it to work improperly?

my point was that what if half of those 21473 views were coming from other sites directly linking to the video? don't you think that would be a huge difference in your outgoing bandwidth if you could cut that off? using manual htaccess is the most effective way to prevent hotlinking. If you used cpanel to set it up, it may not work properly unfortunately.

I just checked the accesslog and a lot of sites are direct linking to some of my file.
Think it would be easiest to rename the video files. So they get the 404 error

Have you confirmed the entries you are seeing in the access log are since you added the hotlink protection? What apache code are they receivng now?

cPanel's "Hotlink Protection" has caused many problems with scripts and programs and custom setups for sites, because it blankets url's improperly. We have had several cases where people had applied cPanel's version and their sites were inaccessible to anyone, even themselves. It's just a reflex now to recommend using manual htaccess instead, being that every case was cleared up doing so.

I do recall cPanel places the code in the root .htaccess. However instructing the customer to use it to generate the code and manually place it in the desired sub-directory has never caused a problem. I have not tested it recently to see if they have corrected that bug.

yeah that sounds about right, I think that's more of the issue anyway, is the placement by cpanel. I just found it better to educate and teach rather than to give the easy way out. at least if nothing else, they learned something.
