i making a new website, but i cant decided on a domain... i have the name all picked out, but i keep going back and forth on weather it should be a .com or a .net... my first opinion was .net bacause its different, and i think it sounds more professional. but then i got to thinking about how .com is more-or-less ingrained into peoples minds in relation to web address' and that IS the proffesional standard... i just cant make up my mind... what do you all think?

//its my guess that this has been discussed somewhere before, and yes i did do a search, but all the criteria i though up turned up 1000+ posts so... yes...

.com is the standard and is the "more professional" top level domain. anything other than a .com is inferior, and besides most people assume .com.

Even people in the uk would think .com before we think of .co.uk, even if we know it's a british company. If you want professional though, don't go for anything but the .com and .co.** extensions

You definitely want .com if it's available. You can always get both though...

I think people definitely standardize .com as the standard for any website. I think .com is much better than .net but it doesn't matter in the search engines. It is also better to get a short domain name, so if .net is the only one open, I'd go with .net

If the .com and .net are both available then I would get them both. At under $10 per domain name why not get both.

.com is much better. Coz people are too used to thinking .com

.net may work out too.

Between .com and .net, .com is definitely much better as everyone is used to it. On some websites which are .net, I sometimes mistakenly type .com and get to the wrong site.

But the best thing may be to get both if you can.

Because $10 is a 12-pack of PBR. =]
Or a 6-pack and a ticket to the drive-in!

I would always go for a .com, .net's do look good but .com is probebly the most likely that a customer will remember. I mean look at all the popular sites, google.com, ozzu.com etc... I rarely come across a .net site that i add to my fav's

I think .com is more popular and also looks more professional, but I'm betting in 5 years the .com will be just another extention of many.

you still can make it with .net

(ie directory.net )

. COM by far is the best way to go if you can. For one it is the first thing to go. no one thinks to go to .name, .biz. .com every one knows. I buy and sell .com's there is a good profit to be made if you do it right. city names, politians, sites you know some one is going to get one day. buye it before some one else does. Businessen in your home town. Even if they dont need a web site 85% of them will rent their domain name from you or buy it just for the email all you have to do is find a reliable hosting company.
