i Have windows xp at home and i want to update it so it has a php webserver for when i test it as i am the webmaster of a site that uses php but have no internet at home so i dont know whether it is working or not until i put it on the web. are there any free aps?

Sure. Go to http://php.net and download PHP for your build of windows. To get it to work from your local loopback (127.0.0.1) you will need to integrate it with a webserver. I prefer Apache over IIS.

In the process of getting this all setup, you will learn a good amount about web hosting as well. Think of it as a challenging project! :)

Try a google search for WAMP configuration. Or, for super easy setup I recommend XAMPP. Just run the installer and you're pretty much there. I believe the new version of XAMPP can switch between PHP4 and PHP5 as needed with very little fuss.
