Well... do i have a story to tell.

Im not going to say which host it is, as i will probably be breaking some rule, so i am just going to vent.

I had my first proper webhost at last. 1gb space, 75gbs band, unlimited sql's... amazing.

some problems early on with downtime, server changes. the occasional sql database crash.

Now, comes to renewal. I get an email.

here it is.

Quote:
Dear Customer,

This is a short reminder from your web hosting company ***** to say
that your web site is coming up for renewal in the next 14 days
(Approximately). At this stage we recommend that you make sure you read the
following email very carefully, so that you do not have any interruptions to
your service.

--> How to continue your hosting experience :

If you wish to continue with the service we have been providing, for another
year (Which we very much hope you do) we require you to make sure your
payment details are up to date. To do this you can call Accounts & Billing
on (1111111111 and they will be happy to check for you (Mon to Fri 9am -
9pm & Sat 10am - 6pm) or simply reply to this email and a member of our
staff will be happy to help!

On the day when your account is due for renewal your account details will be
automatically billed and your web hosting will be continued automatically
for you, at which point we will email you an invoice.

--> How to cancel your hosting :

If for any reason you do not wish to continue hosting with us you are more
than welcome to cancel. To do this you will need to email:
cancellations@llllll.com (This must be done via email and not by phone).
You will need to include your Name, Address, Username and Domain Name, so
that they can sort out the correct cancellation papers for you! All
cancellations must be verified within 3 working days before your account is
due for renewal, or else cancellation may not take place in time.

--> What happens if I do nothing? :

Your account will be automatically renewed as per our terms and conditions
and your current card on file will be billed. At this point you will not be
able to cancel this payment as all payments are final.

If for any reason you have any questions on this renewal we are more than
happy to help, our contact details for the ***.com Billing & Accounts
team are as follows:

Email:
accounts@******.com (Answered 24Hrs a day)

Phone:
0870 922 0465

Mon to Fri 9am - 9pm
Sat 10am - 6pm
(Opening times may vary due to public holidays)

Yours truly,

*********
Billing & Accounts Team Manager.

well, i have 14 days.

4 days later... i get the invoice through email.

I send them another email saying that after sending the invoice early, and telling me i have 14 days, i want to cancle my service.

I get an email back saying, sorry, the account has been charge, because you did not issue a cancelation before the renewal, we cannot issue a refund.

WHAT THE HELL!!!

considering the price has almost doubled for the freking hosting as well... what exactly can I do?

i sent them another email, and they just told me again that I cannot get a refund.

Is there ANYTHING that i can do?

If you paid by Visa or Mastercard contact your card issuer and tell them you did not authorise the payment. If you paid by Direct Debit, contact your bank and get the direct debit returned. If they have changed the payment and given you less than 14 days notice then they are in breach of the Direct Debit Guarantee and the bank will return your money.

Basically they have not a leg to stand on :)

Yes I would definitely call your credit card company and try and get them to issue a chargeback so that you get your funds back. You never signed anything and you did not authorize that payment so you should be able to get it straightened out easily. You can also tell the host that they need to refund the payment because otherwise you will get your credit card company to charge them back, and most likely if your host does the billing directly they will just do it because they will get fined another $20-$30 USD for that chargeback on top of the loss sale if they don't. So just telling them you will chargeback if they do not refund might be enough for them to listen to you and issue that refund. The fact you signed nothing hurts them very bad and you will most likely get your money back either way if you used Visa or Mastercard (as you are completely protected as a consumer).

Well, if they say you have 14 days to pay, and send you an invoice while you still have 10 days left, there's nothing wrong with that. An invoice is just documentation that you need to pay some money, many businesses do it.

Reminders aren't the same as invoices :)

As for the "we can't cancel you", "we can't give you a refund" bull... yeah, that's crap, talk to the CC company.
