How does it work to have your own server? I want to be able to host myself so to speak. But I've been told I can't store the files on my comp if I turn it of at night. So I was thinking of buying a seperate harddrive. But I have no idea how it works so if someone would please tell me I'd be real happy :)

welcome sappe.

you'll find that there is a lot of help here, but first we like to ask that you
help yourself. Make a search for what you ask before posting a question
because undoubtedly, it's been asked a number of times before. I know
for a fact this question has. ;)

and if on a rare occassion you don't find what you need,
http://www.google.com is your friend. :)

My 2 cents - there's not much need to ever shut your computer off. In fact, there are many that would argue that it's better for your hard drives not to. The computer to might right has been on 24x7x365 for close to 7 years. About the only time I shut it off is when I go on vacations. If that's the only thing holding you back, I'd say leave it on.

Now my monitors are another story. I have power save set for about one hour on each of them, because it does significantly reduce the life of the CRT leaving them on constantly like that.

As a side note, you should do some research with your internet provider. Many have it in their TOS that you can't have a server running on their network. You may be looking at some extra $ each month to run a server yourself.

As UNFLUX said, their is much valuable information that has already been posted regarding this topic.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I dont leave my comp on - I put it into hibernate or whatever its called. Otherwise it sits and buzzes away all night, but when I come back everything is still as I left it and I dont have to wait years for it to boot up :D

Hibernate isn't as bad as shutting it off -- but it's hard on the drives when they have to "spin up" to speed after a cold boot.

Okey, I've tried to search this forum but I'm not finding anything and I do think the searchfunction here is really hard to deal with. Can someone please refer me to a page where I can read about hosting myself? Or tell me how. Thanks.

An easy start would be Apache2triad. This is a preconfigured apache server that has php, sql, perl, python and many other extras. Not much configuring at all. Just drop in your files. Of course, you still need to buy a domain name and to configure your computer for a sticky ip address. Also check your TOS for you isp. For many it is a violation to run a server.

Hope this helps.

it should be, absolutely.

I think Sappe needs to do some more research before trying to venture
into this. And no one here is going to take the time to try and type out
all that you need to know to accomplish this.

Frankly, it's just not recommended.
