Post 3+ Months Ago

I've been experiencing high cpu usage for the past few days; it's been at 100% for about a full day now, making the computer near unusable. I have scanned with Ad-Aware and AVG, and nothing of strong importance was found. My processes add up to about 70% at the highest level, so I am pretty sure it is either a registry error or a virus/trojan of some sort.

Here are my main computer specs:
Pentium Dual CPU 1.46 GHz
2 GB memory
Integrated video card

Here is my HijackThis log:

Through more analyzing, I've found that the culprit could be the System Idle Process.

Why would you think it is the System Idle Process?

Using Process Explorer, I found that it took about 60-70 of the CPU usage at times. But still, I would like someone to take a look to see if it is anything else.

I looked at your log and there is nothing jumping out at me. You do have a lot of services running and you could try and disable some of those that aren't really needed.

You could also post a screenshot of Process Explorer so we can see what is going on with your Idle Process. But seriously, your System Idle Process should be high as that is showing you how much you have available. As of writing this my Idle Process is 98% but CPU usage is hovering between 0 and 4%.

Here is the first screenshot of PE, shows that an executable file called pctsAuxs is grabbing most of the CPU.

Image

The second screenshot, taken not too long after, shows what I normally see, the System Idle Process taking most of the CPU.

I'm not quite sure what to do. If I check Task Manager at times, the CPU seems to be normal, but most of the time, it's stuck at 100%. I've scanned with Spybot, AVG, and Spyware Doctor, so I don't think it is a virus, unless they're all missing it.

That second screen shot is not showing you that System Idle is taking up all of your CPU. It is telling you have 43.71% of the CPU free. That is what that process does. If you look at the bottom of Process Explorer on the second screenshot you will see your CPU usage is at 57.28% not 100%.

That is the information on pctsAuxs. It is part of Spyware Doctor which you obviously have installed for whatever reason.

Unfortunately, Vista is a resource hog. In your first screenshot, Windows Explorer and the Snipping Tool are two of your biggest CPU users both of which are part of Windows Vista and cannot be removed.
