serial numbers are printed on the hardware and kept for records so your stolen laptop can be traced with the correct information.

Yes there is, Its called LoJack.....

Long story short
I had gotten a laptop from craigslist and come to find out it was stollen and a cop was at my door asking for the laptop back. thankfully they were nice anough for me to get my docs off of it befor they took it back.

From what i gather LoJack for laptops work by inprinting it self onto the NIC card.... :/ go figure.

I saw that Lojack should be installed before the laptop is stolen, but i am looking for a software to find the laptop that hasn't installed lojack and even an OS, so the only chance is with serial number. Does anyone know a software that tracks laptops only by serial number?

No. You would have to register the serial number with the police as stolen and hope that they are lucky enough to find it.

Seriously, there's no standard for machine identification to come pre-installed on computers these days? Amazing, isn't it?

I used to think a MAC address was something that could be used for this purpose years ago, until I discovered I could change the MAC address on my router.
Strong with this one, the sudo is.
