OK...the run down.

I am on my computer, and I click in Control Pannel to change my background. However, the list is grey as is the browse button. Also my icons on my desktop are missing and I can't add any back on. There is no right mouse click on the desktop either. What must I do to fix these incovient nuisiances?

Sincerly,
Sathria

What Operating System?
If Win2k or XP are you the administrator?
Is your computer a workstation on a Network Domain?

XP and I'm not administrator. This is at school. See the problem above just started happening, no one can change their background. Some have the ones they had last year, others nothing at all. We don't have a set systems analyst and I was just wondering if there was ANY way to at least get the background to change....

Note: I can change Theme, however, I do not know how to make a theme that does not rely on files already in certain places...I suppose I could burn a few...however then I'd have to install in all computers and installing is illegal at school.

Power Toys

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... rtoys.mspx

Download it and use in the REPAIR TAB the REPAIR ICONS

Also if you have the XP disk handy

Go to Start, Run
Enter "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit enter

This utility will scan all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

OK, the problems:

1.) Could find not "run" in start...though I do know what you mean.
2.) Could not download for internet securities that I cannot change.
3.) Could not find existing Power Toys

I'm very stupid when it comes to computers.....probably cause i never have had patience....so any further help would be nice...

Thanks anyways...

Ok, you said you are at school, and everyone is having the same behavior, and now you mention you cannot find "run" in start menu and you cannot download from internet. The only explanation of all this is that your school network administrators is prohibiting this trough policies over the network; this can only mean that it is impossible for you or others to change any of this behaviors.

Larz* is spot on. One of your administrators blocked those abilities. And although it doesn't apply to all student's I know for certain, some students, positively should not have those abilities. *lol

Yep -- might as well give up on it unless you all can convince your admin to change it back.

*sigh*

very well...
but one thing...we DON"T HAVE an administrator.

We've never had one. There's just this company that comes in, sets stuff up, and when there is a major problem, the server is right there in their remote office and they fix it. IF they feel like it.

*is sad now*
Oh well...*cry* i suppose I'll simply continue going around the system and going to "illegal" sites by imputting the IP address and be content....

Thanks anyways...
